And there are more than 10 times that number of near-drowning incidents - 25% of which leave the child with severe disabilities. Thankfully, these are statistics that we can control by maintaining pool safety and water safety in general. Supervision is number one for pool safety As far as pool safety for children is concerned, there is no better prevention than constant and diligent supervision. You should never leave children unattended in the pool for any reason what so ever, if you simply must leave for a few seconds - take them with you! make sure that all other caregivers are also giving pool safety their full attention. When there are also other visitors or it is a party, make sure that there is someone who is constantly watching the children, and that means NOT looking away AT ALL! Drownings usually happen in a short time and without a slash or a call for help. In addition, follow these tips as well: Put together a list of rules that everyone is aware of and make sure that the rules are always strictly enforced. Get CPR certified and see to it that caregivers are too. Keep pool fences closed and latched as well as any doors that lead into the pool area. Keep a phone handy pool-side with a list of emergency numbers - every second counts! This way you will also not have to run inside when the phone rings. Do not allow children to eat while in the pool or chew gum as they could choke. Take all toys out of the water when finished in the pool. Children have drowned while attempting to fish a toy out of the pool. Everyone should be protected from the sun with sunscreen. Get out of the pool as soon as you hear a storm. Water is a very good conductor of electricity. There are also some special procedures that should be in place around the pool area in regards to weather safety. Many of the areas that are most affected by the weather are also in warm areas where the homes have swimming pools. Make sure that you know the dangers that the pool can present in the face of disaster.
